Ray Davies originally wrote this song in 1979-1980 as direct reflection of his split from his second wife, Yvonne. He penned it to inject a measure of hope that there can be a positive outcome of his ending relationship.
From time to time, I will inject “Songs to Inspire” on my website. “Better Things” has always been a favorite of mine, but even more so now. Filing for divorce from somebody that I had been with for 17 years was no easy task. However, given what had occurred to me upon my arrival back from Cheyenne, there was no doubt as to what the path forward needed to be. There are lines that when crossed, that there simply can be no going back from. A false order of protection was such a line for me. This song inspired me to always move forward, even when the future was unknown. Somehow, some way, I knew that tomorrow I would find better things.
